Noise

The information explains which noise issues we can investigate, which ones we can not, and how residents can report noise concerns.

Managing noise and pollution

We investigate concerns about noise, dust and emissions from construction and demolition sites, and we work with contractors to help them reduce pollution and limit the impact on nearby residents.

As construction and demolition sites are often near existing housing, noise, dust and smoke from the site can sometimes result in complaints from nearby residents.

To avoid complaints, we ask contractors to ensure working hours, deliveries and vehicle movements are restricted to:

  • Monday to Friday: 8am to 6pm
  • Saturday: 8am to 1pm
  • no work on Sundays or Bank Holidays

Work outside these hours is only allowed in exceptional circumstances and must be agreed with us in advance. Contractors will need to submit a method statement explaining how they will control noise during these extended hours.

Controlling dust and emissions

Contractors must take steps to reduce dust caused by construction, demolition and vehicle movement. This includes:

  • damping down dust with water
  • keeping stockpiles covered or damp to prevent dust from being carried by the wind

Controlling noise

Contractors must use the best practical methods to reduce noise. This includes:

  • keeping machinery in good condition and using silencers or acoustic covers
  • positioning stationary equipment as far away as possible from nearby homes, and using acoustic barriers where needed
  • using low‑noise piling methods whenever possible
  • keeping vehicle movements within permitted hours unless approval is given
  • supervising staff to ensure noise‑control measures are followed

Burning waste on site is not permitted. Contractors must remove waste and dispose of it at an authorised facility.

Contractors can help reduce complaints by engaging with the community and providing clear information. They are encouraged to:

  • write to nearby residents explaining the planned work and its duration
  • provide a contact number on letters and site hoardings for any questions
  • notify residents before particularly noisy work
  • schedule loud activities, such as drilling or piling, to allow breaks from noise
  • consider sending newsletters or holding meetings for larger projects

Considerate Contractors Scheme

This national scheme encourages higher standards within the construction industry. Sites that register are assessed against a code of considerate practice that promotes best practice beyond legal requirements. Contractors may register their site with the scheme.
