Support for carers

How to tell if you are a carer, support groups, breaks, urgent help, young carers.

Carers outreach and support groups

If you care for someone on a regular basis you may find it difficult to get support for anything from finances to legal rights, hospital discharge to emergency planning, mealtimes to continence or even just finding time for yourself.

This includes caring for a:

  • parent
  • partner
  • child
  • sibling
  • neighbour or a friend who has a disability, long-term illness or is elderly

Online support for unpaid carers

The Mobilise service is run by carers, for carers, and is free for Luton residents.

We work alongside Mobilise to offer practical online support.

This includes blogs, personalised coaching sessions, help guides, regular emails, and one‑to‑one support calls available seven days a week.

Carers can also meet others in similar situations through relaxed online 'virtual cuppas'.

You can join the Mobilise Carers Digital Support Hub — a free website and mobile app designed to help anyone supporting a family member or friend.

Blue Badges

If you care for someone who qualifies for free transport services in Luton, you may be able to travel with them for free.

Many of Luton’s travel schemes allow carers to travel for free when they are with the person they care for.

Motability

If the person you care for receives the higher rate of the mobility component of Disability Living Allowance or the War Pensioner’s Mobility Supplement, then they will be able to exchange this payment for a lease car or scooter on the Motability Scheme.

It is possible to name up to three drivers of a Motability vehicle.
