Occupational therapy
We offer a range of equipment, home adaptations and grants to help residents remain safe, comfortable and independent in their own homes.
People with conditions such as motor neurone disease (MND) and other progressive neurological conditions may be prioritised because their needs can change quickly.

Occupational therapy
Occupational therapists (OTs) assess how your health or disability affects your ability to manage everyday activities. They can recommend equipment, adaptations and other solutions to help you stay independent.
An occupational therapist may visit your home to understand your needs and identify ways to make daily life easier and safer.
Luton and Milton Keynes work together to provide the Community Equipment Loan Service. Equipment is delivered, collected, repaired and maintained by Medequip.
If the person needing support is under 18, contact the Children's Disability team.
Equipment and minor adaptations
There are many types of equipment and small home adaptations that can help with everyday tasks. Examples include:
- grab rails
- raised toilet seats
- walking frames
- perching stools
- reachers and pick-up aids

Home adaptations
Some people may need larger changes to their home to help them move around safely and independently. Examples include:
- widening doorways
- installing ramps
- installing a stairlift
- creating level-access showers
- lowering kitchen worktops and work surfaces
We will always consider equipment and minor adaptations before recommending major adaptations.
If you live in rented accommodation, you will usually need permission from your landlord before adaptations can be carried out.
Who can receive equipment and adaptations
To receive equipment or adaptations arranged by the council, you must:
- be eligible for council-funded care
- have a care needs assessment
An occupational therapist will use the assessment to understand your needs and identify the most appropriate support to help you remain independent at home.
