How adult social care can help

How we can help, including support with vision, hearing and sensory loss, learning disabilities, autism, moving from children's social care to adult social care, technology, home and garden maintenance, adaptions.

Support with vision, hearing or dual sensory loss

We work with adults who are:

  • deafblind
  • deaf
  • hard of hearing
  • severely sight impaired
  • sight impaired
  • experiencing visual loss

We keep a register of people in Luton with sight or hearing impairment or dual sensory loss.

We provide information, services and support:

  • rehabilitation
  • access to the environment
  • mobility and orientation training
  • independent living skills
  • lighting and advice on low vision aids
  • communication
  • equipment
  • communication
  • alternative access formats
  • advocacy
  • access to work or training opportunities
  • access to benefits and entitlements
  • direct access to services in British Sign Language or Sign Supported English
  • referral to specialist provider agencies

Support for people with vision impairment 

You do not need to be formally registered to access our service. We:

  • can register you as severely sight impaired (blind) or sight impaired (partially sighted) with Luton Borough Council (requires Certificate of Vision Impairment from your eye clinic)
  • offer guidance on reading, writing, and accessing information
  • offer support for safe and independent travel
  • can help with daily tasks, such as making drinks and using the cooker
  • offer advice on coping with sight loss
  • provide information on local community support and referrals to other agencies

Depending on your needs, we may provide:

  • liquid level indicators, tactile markings
  • talking clocks and task lamps
  • mobility aids, such as white symbol canes and long canes
  • referrals to: 
    • Sight Concern
    • fire service for smoke detectors
  • practical advice and training from vision rehabilitation specialists

Registering your vision impairment

We can register you only after receiving your Certificate of Vision Impairment (CVI) from your hospital eye clinic.

Support for people with hearing impairment

If you have a hearing impairment that affects daily life, we offer

  • guidance on accessing information
  • liaison and referrals to other support agencies

Depending on your needs, we may provide:

  • specialist equipment to alert you to doorbells, phones, and smoke alarms
  • referrals to: 
    • audiology for advice and equipment.
    • Community ConneX for support and advice
    • Luton Rights or Citizens Advice Bureau for information and guidance
    • fire service for smoke detectors

If you are deaf and use sign language or have other communication needs, we offer.

  • information on specialist community support for deaf people in Luton

Equipment and referrals

Depending on your needs, we may provide:

  • vibrating pager systems for doorbells, phones, smoke alarms, and baby monitors
  • other specialist equipment to promote independence
  • referral to the fire service for smoke detectors

If you have both sight and hearing loss (deafblind/dual sensory impairment), we:

  • can register you as severely sight impaired (blind) or sight impaired (partially sighted) with Luton Borough Council (requires Certificate of Vision Impairment from your eye clinic)
  • offer guidance on reading, writing, and accessing information
  • offer support for safe and independent travel
  • can help with daily tasks, such as making drinks and using the cooker
  • offer support with alternative communication methods, such as the deafblind manual
  • provide advice on coping with combined sight and hearing loss
  • provide information on specialist community support and referrals to other agencies
