Luton Friends of Parks and Green Spaces

About the Luton Friends of Parks and Green Spaces

The Luton Friends of Parks and Green Spaces (LFPGS) is a group of residents who came together through their local park groups and later joined under one borough‑wide organisation. The group was formally established in 2009 after agreeing a shared constitution.

Purpose of the group

LFPGS represents community groups with an interest in parks and green spaces managed by the council, as well as publicly accessible green spaces that may not be council‑owned but have an active Friends group. The group aims to:

  • work with the council and other organisations to maintain and improve parks and green spaces
  • support and develop local Friends groups, and help create new groups where needed
  • ensure community views about parks and green spaces are shared with local, regional and national government, without political affiliation

How the group works

LFPGS is made up of representatives from local Friends groups and user groups, such as Friends of Manor Park and the Luton Federation of Allotment and Leisure Gardens. The main committee meets around six times a year.

Local groups usually consist of people who live near a specific park, use it regularly or have a particular interest in that space. The umbrella group allows these local groups to share ideas, support each other and encourage the creation of new groups where none currently exist.

Council officers with an interest in community involvement and park improvements attend meetings when needed, and the councillor responsible for parks also takes an active interest in the group’s work.
