Emergency and temporary accommodation

When we offer emergency and temporary accommodation, types of accommodation, repairs and damages and terms and conditions.

Types of temporary properties

We do not own many empty houses or flats, so it’s much more likely that you’ll go to another type of temporary property while you wait for a permanent property.

You will have to pay rent to us, not the hotel or hostel.

Check if you can claim benefits to help with costs – GOV.UK

You can also use our Find your Own Home Scheme to get financial help to find your own home.

Bed and breakfast

You may be given a room in a hotel and provided with breakfast. Usually you will share a bathroom, toilet and kitchen.

We only use bed and breakfast as an emergency and we book it by the day until we can find something more suitable for you.

If you have children you are not expected to stay for more than six weeks.

Problems or repairs should be reported to hotel staff rather than us.

Search for hostel

To find hostels near you and how to get referred, use the Homeless Link website

Select 'Accommodation' under 'Service types'.

Temporary private rented property

This could be a flat or house that we find for you that is rented from a private landlord or housing association.

You will not usually have to share a bathroom or kitchen, though in certain circumstances you may have to share facilities with other households.

You will have to pay:

  • rent to us
  • any other bills such as Council Tax, electric, gas and water
  • any damages you cause – we’ll recharge you to cover the costs of fixing the damage

If there are problems you must report this to the owner or the agents.

Repairs

If you're currently living in temporary accommodation and have any repair issues, then contact your housing officer.
