Smoke alarms in high-rise residential building
Not having a working smoke alarm doubles your risk of dying in a fire. Your flat will have a smoke alarm fitted by us.
These are checked once a year when you have your gas safety check or by any electrical contractor working in your home.
All our fitted smoke alarms are hard-wired in to the main electrical supply with a back-up battery. They are not linked to the emergency services and so if you think there is a fire you must always call 999.
You should:
- check your smoke alarm once a week by pressing the test button on it – If you have a Telecare system fitted in your property, your smoke alarm will go through to the emergency alarm centre
- vacuum or wipe down your smoke alarm every 6 months to make sure that the sensor is clear
Call 999 if you think there is a fire.
If there is a problem with your smoke alarm
For example, If the smoke alarm intermittently beeps, the battery is low.
Report this straight away to Building and Technical Services (BTS)
BTS Repairs will arrange for a new battery installation.
