Fire safety in high-rise residential buildings

What to do if there's a fire, smoke alarms, gas safety and gas servicing in high rise, electrical safety and how to prevent electrical fires, preventing fires in your flat.

If there is a fire in your flat

Always call 999 – do not assume someone else has.

You should:

  • leave your flat calmly with everyone else who is there 
  • do not collect valuables – leave everything behind
  • close all doors
  • do not use the lift
  • use the stairs
  • get out of the building and stay out

If the fire is elsewhere in the block

You should:

  • close the doors in your flat and in the communal areas
  • place damp towels or cloths and tape around the door if you smell smoke
  • stay in your home unless advised by the Fire Service

Report a repair or a gas leak

You can report an emergency electrical or servicing repair to Building and Technical Services.
