Inclusion and alternative provision

Supporting schools, families and young people to reduce barriers to learning, promote inclusion, improve educational outcomes, and ensure access to appropriate education and specialist support.

Therapeutic Thinking

Therapeutic Thinking is a comprehensive programme designed to help schools adopt a relational, whole-school approach to behaviour management, policy and curriculum. It places a strong emphasis on the emotional wellbeing and mental health of children and young people, encouraging an understanding of behaviour as a form of communication. This approach helps staff to respond effectively and empathetically to pupils’ needs.

Rooted in a school-led ethos, Therapeutic Thinking is characterised by an inclusive culture and is underpinned by best practice, informed policies, and thoughtful planning.

Since Luton Council adopted the approach in 2024, all schools in the borough have been offered free tutor training for senior leaders, and over 90% of our schools now have Therapeutic Thinking Tutors, who are leading the approach within their settings. These tutors will have annual refresher training and termly local network meetings, to then take back to their schools.

The programme has the following aims to:

  • support settings with developing a therapeutic approach to behaviour.
  • promote the inseparable link between teaching, learning and behaviour.
  • improve staff confidence and safety
  • support the inclusion of those with detrimental behaviours
  • reduce and eliminate suspensions and exclusions
  • establish a consistent system of analysis and planning which enables behaviour progression
  • support Senior Leadership Teams in the development of quality policy and planning.
