Submit a request for information

How to submit a Freedom of Information (FOI) or an Environmental Information Regulation (EIR) request.

Before submitting your request:

  • check the information you can request
  • be specific about the information you want, including relevant dates, locations, subject areas and context
  • narrow your request where possible, such as by telling us what you do and do not want, for example you want to know about social housing, but only where it is used for temporary accommodation
  • avoid broad or open-ended wording
  • consider whether exemptions or exceptions are likely to apply and whether refining your request could avoid them

Make sure your request is valid

Freedom of Information requests must be in writing and include:

  • your real name (not a name you are sometimes known by)
  • a contact address, such as your email or address
  • a clear description of the information you want

Environmental Information Regulation requests must include your contact details and describe the information you want.
