You need to make sure you know what type of vehicle licence you wish to apply or renew, for example:
- hackney carriages – commonly known as 'black cabs', can be hailed or flagged down in the street and are usually in taxi ranks
- private hire vehicles – require pre-bookings in advance by a private hire operator

Vehicle age
The licensed vehicle shall be no more than five years old from the first date of registration when first accepted for a licence.
Euro 6 diesel, plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEV) and battery electric vehicles (BEV) licensed vehicles shall be no more than seven years old from the first date of registration when first accepted for a licence.
