Taxi and private hire licences

Apply for, renew or update your drivers licence, operators licence or vehicle licence, book your knowledge test or safe guarding and disability training, public register of licences.

Vehicle licence

You need to make sure you know what type of vehicle licence you wish to apply or renew, for example:

  • hackney carriages – commonly known as 'black cabs', can be hailed or flagged down in the street and are usually in taxi ranks
  • private hire vehicles – require pre-bookings in advance by a private hire operator

Cost

Fees are listed in the vehicle application pack.

Vehicle age

The licensed vehicle shall be no more than five years old from the first date of registration when first accepted for a licence.

Euro 6 diesel, plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEV) and battery electric vehicles (BEV) licensed vehicles shall be no more than seven years old from the first date of registration when first accepted for a licence.
