Nature conservation in Luton

Nature conservation in Luton is managed through the Parks and Countryside Service. We partner with The Wildlife Trust to deliver works locally.

A great deal of conservation work is done by volunteers from the community, who are managed by The Wildlife Trust or the Parks and Countryside Service.

Natural England surveys and monitors important habitats and species throughout the town.

We have important wildlife spaces in our town, including several nationally recognised sites of special scientific interest (SSSIs), which host important and rare species.

County and district wildlife sites are spaces recognised for their wildlife value locally. County wildlife sites meet a higher threshold of biodiversity value than district wildlife sites.

There are 19 district wildlife sites and 24 county wildlife sites in Luton, though they aren't all owned solely, or at all, by us. The sites we do own, we try to manage to improve biodiversity, where possible.
