Apply for a crane, platform or cherry picker licence

How to apply for a licence to place a crane, a platform or a cherry picker on the public highway, including a licence for a crane sailing over the highway.

You must have a licence to place a crane or cherry picker on the highway.

After you apply

We require a minimum of 10 working days to process an application. 

Approval will be granted in the form of a licence issued in accordance with the Highways Act 1980.

Application cost

The licence costs £205 (VAT exempt), up to 28 days.

We may also require you to pay a deposit, depending on circumstances and location of the crane.

Information and documents you need to provide

You must include a:

  • completed application form
  • crane operator accreditation 
  • public liability insurance certificate with a minimum cover of £10 million
  • scale plan detailing the location and the traffic management that is required to place the crane on the highway to chapter 8 requirements  

Cranes sailing over the highway

If the crane is over sailing the highway but is not on the highway, you will also need an over-sail licence. Approval will be granted in the form of permits issued in accordance with the Highways Act 1980.
