Where and when we grit

We grit around 300 miles of road every time our gritting team goes out during the winter months.

We grit specific roads and pavements during bad weather, and maintain salt bins situated in key locations.

Priority gritting routes

Priority routes are treated first. These include:

  • strategic routes and principal roads
  • important classified roads
  • major bus routes

Secondary gritting routes

Secondary routes are treated next and include:

  • other classified roads
  • important unclassified roads
  • other bus routes

Paths and pavements

Some of the paths that are treated include:

  • town centre streets and main pedestrian routes
  • shopping areas
  • busy pedestrian routes
  • hospitals and doctors’ surgeries
  • school and school travel routes
  • community centres
  • steep sections of footpaths

Supplementary routes

In prolonged periods of lying snow and ice, when priority and secondary routes have been fully and adequately treated, and resources become available, we will treat estate and minor access roads in hilly or exposed locations.
