Salting and salt bins

There are over 240 salt bins across Luton.

You can use them on public roads and pavements not normally treated by a gritting vehicle. These are typically hilly, exposed locations and potentially dangerous road junctions.

Maintaining and refilling salt bins

We check each salt bin every year and refill them before the start of the winter season.

They are then checked and replenished as and when required throughout the winter period.

We also replace bins that are either broken or worn down.

Request a bin, refill or report a damaged bin

Let us know if:

  • you think your area needs a salt bin or are aware of an empty or damaged bin
  • the bin has been vandalised or become a nuisance

Report an issue with a road or street

We are unable to sell road salt to you. Builders’ merchants and DIY stores may have some in stock. A good alternative is dishwasher salt.

A handful of salt, spread evenly, is enough to treat a square metre of footway to prevent icing. Snow should be cleared before treatment.
