Six local projects awarded funding to help create a greener Luton

The fund is delivered by SUEZ as part of its social value commitment, using income generated through donations and purchases at the council’s reuse shops. It was created to support grassroots initiatives that improve the local environment and benefit the community. 

Following assessment of the applications, the six projects receiving funding through the Better Luton Environment Fund are:

• The Wildlife Trust for Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Northamptonshire – £2,201 for Green Skills in the Hills, helping protect Luton’s chalk grassland habitats through conservation work, litter reduction and volunteer training.
• St Andrew’s Church Luton – £1,945 for a Schools Nature Education Programme, giving children opportunities to learn about wildlife, biodiversity and local green spaces.
• SIG Penrose – £2,754 for Roots Recycle-A-Bike: On the Road, expanding bike repair, reuse and cycling skills activities and preventing usable bicycles from going to landfill.
• Next Generation Scheme – £3,000 for The Luton Eco-Kit & Boot Bank, collecting and redistributing sports kit and football boots to reduce waste and support local families.
• Sundon Park Men’s Shed – £3,000 for the Sundon Park Community Garden Club, creating a community growing space that will improve biodiversity and bring residents together.
• Love For The Family – £2,100 for Shop Drop Play, redistributing pre-loved children’s items to reduce household waste and support families with young children.

In addition, SUEZ previously provided £5,000 to Team Repair, a programme helping young people in local schools learn about sustainability and the importance of repair and reuse. 

Councillor Javeria Hussain, Cabinet Member for Waste Management, said: “I am delighted that these projects have been selected for funding. The range and quality of applications received show the passion and commitment of organisations across Luton to improving local neighbourhoods and creating opportunities for residents. 

“Every donation and purchase made through our reuse shops helps create opportunities like this, allowing money to be reinvested into projects that make a real difference across the town.”

Projects are expected to begin delivery over the coming months, with activities taking place across Luton.
