Macmillan Luton cancer community engagement approach

A second phase of the Macmillan project will use resident insights gained from the Macmillan cancer connectors Phase one project, which has run over the last three years to continue improvement of cancer services in Luton. The momentum and energy gained from working with Luton communities will move forward into this new phase to shape more accessible, culturally appropriate care and support for residents.

Working with you - to improve cancer services in Luton

Having captured valuable information about your experience of Luton's cancer services over the last three years of the Macmillan Cancer Connectors project we have received funding for a second phase of cancer engagement over the next year.

What this means for you

This is an opportunity for you, as a Luton resident to:

  • work with the Macmillan Cancer Engagement Officers so your cancer experiences can link to the insights gained and positively improve resident cancer experiences
  • work to culturally adapt information and messaging about cancer in a way which your community and family understands
  • help services and cancer systems to understand your needs better so your screening needs and treatment journey can be improved
  • connect you with services like Macmillan and local providers in Luton who can support you on your cancer treatment journey
  • help build trust between residents and services reducing stigma and misunderstanding about cancer screening and treatment

Communities Prioritised in phase two of the Luton project

The phase two project has special focus on these Luton communities:

  • Black African and Black Caribbean
  • Eastern European
  • South Asian
  • Gypsy, Roma and Traveller

To support the work of the project and the Cancer Engagement Officers a group which can make decisions and encourage the local system in Luton to make changes is being started. The group will join up the cancer screening and treatment approaches for Luton residents and the communities described above. A new Cancer screening uptake plan is being written. It includes research from the Phase One project and will link this to Luton cancer outcomes. The plan can help us decide which approaches work best in Luton compared to other areas.
