Care homes

Care homes offer support for people who can no longer live safely or comfortably in their own homes. There are many homes across Luton that provide high quality residential care and nursing care for older people, people with physical disabilities and people with learning disabilities.

Residential care

You live in the home, either long term or for a short stay, and receive support with daily tasks. You have your own bedroom and share communal areas such as lounges and dining rooms. Meals, laundry and general support are provided.

Nursing care

These homes also have registered nurses on site to provide medical care for people with more complex health needs.

Your care needs assessment will help decide which type of home is most suitable for you.

A care home is not the only choice.

You can read more about these options in this guide.

Care homes can also offer temporary stays. This may be to give your carer a break or to support you after a hospital stay until you feel confident at home again.

Choosing a care home

There is a full list of care homes in Luton on the Luton Directory.

We do not recommend specific homes. Instead, we encourage you to read Care Quality Commission (CQC) reports, which show how well each home is meeting national standards of safety and quality.

It is also helpful to visit homes in person. Age UK provides a useful checklist you can take with you, covering things to look for and questions you may want to ask.

Do I need to move into a care home?

Your first step is to contact us for an assessment of your needs. Together we will explore whether a care home is the best option or if there is support that could help you stay at home instead, such as home care.

Paying for care

You may need to pay all, some or none of your care home fees. This depends on your financial situation. We will carry out a financial assessment to work out your contribution. This looks at your income, benefits and savings, and any property or investments you may have.

Can I choose my care home if the council is paying?

Yes. As long as the home can meet your needs, meets our quality requirements and is within an agreed cost, you can choose where you would like to live. Your social worker can help you with this.
