Flood risk management

Find out more about our flood risk management strategy to prepare and protect our communities from adverse weather events such as flooding.

Our role in managing flood risk

Under the Flood and Water Management Act 2010, the council became the Lead Local Flood Authority.

This law gave the council specific legal responsibilities for managing flood risk in the local area. These duties focus on reducing the impact of flooding and working with other organisations to manage flood risk effectively.

As the Lead Local Flood Authority, we have a number of legal duties to help manage and reduce flood risk in the borough:

  • flood investigations
  • register of flood risk features
  • sustainable Drainage Systems
  • local flood risk management strategy
  • designation of flood risk assets
  • consenting on ordinary watercourses

Highway drainage responsibilities

The council is also responsible for managing highway drainage, including gullies and drains on public roads.

More information is available in the highways flooding (drains and gullies) section of this website.
