Emergency planning

Have a look at our emergency planning advice so you are prepared for any major incidents, flooding, electricity, gas and water failures, fire or extreme weather.

Council blocks of flats

Fire safety is a priority in all council‑owned blocks. We follow a ‘stay put’ policy agreed upon with the fire service. If a fire is not in your flat, stay inside unless the fire service tells you to leave.

If the fire is in your flat, leave immediately, close the door behind you, and do not use lifts.

We carry out regular fire risk assessments, inspections, and safety improvements with the fire service. Residents must report any fire or building safety concerns as soon as possible.

Read fire safety guidance from Luton Fire Brigade to help you keep your home and family safe.

Fire risk assessments in high rise buildings

We carry out fire risk assessments in high rise blocks every year and after major works. These check fire safety at the time of inspection and are available on request.

If you have concerns between inspections, contact the council immediately. Any serious risks are dealt with straight away, with other works added to our improvement programme.

We also carry out regular inspections and joint checks with the fire service.

Residents help keep buildings safe by checking smoke alarms, keeping shared areas clear, following fire safety rules and reporting concerns promptly.
