Victorian-themed market coming to Luton town centre for St George’s Day
Luton Council is delighted to announce a Victorian-themed market will be held in Luton town centre as part of the St George’s Day celebrations marking the town’s 150th year of borough status, thanks to headline sponsor Luton Rising, the council’s airport company.
Families are invited to Market Hill, George Street on Saturday 25 April from 10am to 4pm to experience Luton as it might have looked in 1876. The market will boast plenty of free Victorian-themed activities for all from funfair games and costume dress up to street performers and live music all day long.
An interactive 12ft tall mechanical dragon will be blowing bubbles and playing medieval music, with a children’s carousel and a roaming penny farthing, similar to how these would have entertained families in the era.
An exhibition of images from Victorian Luton will showcase what life was like in the town 150 years ago, alongside a painting workshop and crafting for the children. These activities include straw splitting, a technique of the time used in the hat industry Luton prides itself on.
The market forms part of a wider programme of events held this year to celebrate Luton’s 150th anniversary as a borough. Find out more about the wide range of events and activities highlighting the town’s history, heritage and community spirit.
