Work set to start on improvement works at major Luton junction
Improvement works at a major junction in Luton are set to begin on Monday (June 29).
The 16-week scheme will deliver a number of changes to the Hatters Way-Chaul End Lane roundabout, designed to support safer walking, cycling and sustainable travel.
The improvements include:
- A dedicated left turn from Hatters Way into Chaul End Lane
- Signal-controlled crossing facilities on Hatters Way and Dallow Road
- Removing redundant cycle lanes and replacing with a shared pedestrian and cycle footway on the western arm of the roundabout
- Changes to the bus lay-by on Dallow Road
The scheme supports the Luton 2040 vision, a place where everyone has the opportunity to thrive and contributes to the council’s focus on jobs, homes and safety.
The new pedestrian and cycle crossing facilities and other improvements will make this busy junction safer for all road users, while encouraging more people to choose active and sustainable travel. The scheme also supports our ambition of becoming a greener and more sustainable town.
Councillor Javeria Hussain, portfolio holder for Public Realm and Sustainable Transport, said: "This scheme will deliver important improvements at one of Luton's busiest junctions, making it safer and easier for pedestrians and cyclists and, also, helping traffic move more efficiently.
“I would like to thank everyone who took the time to share their views ahead of these works starting. A number of common themes emerged and the valuable insight we have received will help inform our longer-term planning for the area.”
Cllr Hussain added: “There will inevitably be some disruption while these improvements are carried out. Our highways team will be working hard to keep that disruption to a minimum wherever possible, but I would encourage motorists to plan ahead and allow extra time for their journeys while the works take place.”
Traffic management measures will be in place for the duration of the scheme, including nighttime closures from 8pm to 5am from Monday to Friday next week. For more information visit one.network.
