Heritage Open Days returns to Luton this September – and it’s all free

From 11 to 20 September, Luton will take part in England’s largest festival of history and culture, hosting a programme of events celebrating the town's heritage over 10 days – with everything on offer at no cost. 

This year's national Heritage Open Days theme is "Everyday Histories," shining a light on ordinary lives, community moments and shared pasts – and Luton's programme will bring that theme to life across the town. It also gives residents and visitors a chance to enjoy special access they wouldn’t normally get, from guided tours of Wardown House to a rare climb up St Mary's Church tower.

A few highlights of this year's programme include:

- Luton 150: Stories from our town 1876–2026 – a special talk celebrating 150 years of borough status, exploring everything from the development of Wardown Park to the significance of the Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire Regiment collection, and a special audience Q&A. Taking place on Sunday 13 and Sunday 20 September at Wardown Park, hosted by Culture Trust Luton and Luton Council.

- St Mary's Church Tower Tours – a rare chance to climb to the top of the tower of the 900-year-old church for panoramic views across the town, on selected dates and times. 

- Let's Not Forget: A Walk in the Past – an interactive journey through Luton's heritage, stories and hidden history, featuring a new AI-powered trail exploring Mary Seacole's connection to Luton. Launches 17 September at Brantwood Park.
