Have your say on plans to improve Crawley Green Road-Vauxhall Way junction

People who live, work, visit or travel through the area are being encouraged to have their say on proposals to future-proof the junction, helping it accommodate an increasing number of journeys and make them safer and more reliable.

The consultation is open until Sunday 4 October.

The proposals would see the existing roundabout upgraded to a fully controlled and signalised junction, alongside a range of improvements for people walking and cycling.

These include:

• shared walking and cycling routes around the junction
• signal-controlled pedestrian crossings on all approaches and exit lanes
• two-way segregated cycle tracks between the junction and Queen Elizabeth School
• extending the 30mph zone by approximately 150 metres north and south of the junction
• a no-exit restriction from Saywell Road onto Crawley Green Road

The proposals form part of the wider Vauxhall Way upgrades programme, a phased series of improvements to future-proof one of Luton’s most important transport corridors.

With major developments including the expansion of London Luton Airport, the Luton Gateway project on the former Vauxhall site and new housing on the horizon, the road network will need to accommodate a significantly higher number of journeys.

Councillor Javeria Hussain, Cabinet Member for Public Realm and Sustainable Transport, said: “Crawley Green Road and Vauxhall Way are important routes for people travelling around our town, and we know that congestion and safety at this junction are important issues.

“As Luton continues to grow, we need to make sure our transport network can cope. These proposals would make significant improvements to the junction itself, while making it safer and more reliable for everyone who uses it.

“We want to hear from as many people as possible in this consultation. Whether you live locally, work in the area or simply travel through the junction, your views matter and will help shape the final designs.”

There are also two drop-in sessions for the public to come and ask any questions of the consultation team:

• Saturday 19 September, 11am-1pm, Raynham Way Community Centre
• Monday 21 September, 6-8pm, High Town Gym and Wellbeing Centre

Following the consultation, the council will review all feedback received and use it to refine the final designs.

Subject to planning approvals, construction is expected to begin in 2027.
