Food waste recycling expands to flats across Luton

Following the introduction of the service to more than 60,000 kerbside households earlier this year, the service for flats is being introduced in eight rounds between September 2026 and the end of March 2027. The rounds are based on areas of Luton and align with existing waste and recycling collection rounds.

Food waste collections for properties in the first round started on Monday 14 September, with further rounds following over the coming months. The team delivering the caddies will visit properties as each round begins, providing residents with information about how the service works and when food waste collections will start.

Each flat will receive a small blue kitchen caddy for collecting food waste. A larger communal food waste bin will be provided where other bins are stored, allowing residents to empty their caddy when full.

Councillor Steve Stephens, Portfolio Holder for Strategic Waste Authority, said: “We are pleased to be extending food waste recycling to residents living in flats across Luton. 

“While reducing food waste in the first place is always the best option, recycling unavoidable food waste separately will help reduce the amount of rubbish going into refuse bins and turn it into something useful, including renewable energy and fertiliser.”
