The new fast chargepoints are now available at Vadis Close, The Moakes, The Crossways, The Green and Bailey Street.

The project is the first time EV chargepoints have been installed specifically to support council housing residents in Luton and forms part of the council’s wider work to expand EV charging infrastructure across the town.

Councillor Adrees Latif, portfolio holder for Sustainable Development and Highways, said: “Access to convenient EV charging is an important part of supporting residents who want to make the switch to an electric vehicle, but who may not have their own driveway or off-street parking.

“These new chargepoints are the first we have installed specifically to support residents living in council housing, helping to make EV charging more accessible in locations where it is needed.

“This is part of our wider work to improve EV charging provision across Luton and support residents in making more sustainable travel choices. We will continue to look at opportunities to expand the charging network and make it easier for more people to make the transition to electric vehicles.”

Believ has fully funded the chargepoints and is responsible for their operation and ongoing maintenance.

Guy Bartlett, CEO of Believ, said:

“By expanding the EV charging network in Luton, we’re helping more residents make the switch to electric vehicles.

“We’re pleased to continue working with Luton Council to provide reliable and convenient charging infrastructure, supporting the council’s wider sustainability ambitions and helping to reduce road transport emissions across the community.”

The chargepoints are open to the public, subject to parking restrictions at The Green, Vardis Close, The Moakes and Bailey Street. They are intended to support local residents who may not have access to off-street charging.

Drivers can find details on the service, how to charge, pricing and more on Believ’s website.

There are plans for additional chargepoints at four of the locations, as well as further EV charging infrastructure at locations across Luton.

The council will continue to explore opportunities to expand the charging network and improve access to EV charging for residents without private off-street parking.
