People's Park

People’s Park is a Green Flag–awarded County Wildlife Site made up of Bells Close, woodland and Popes Meadow, offering play spaces, exercise areas and open meadows for the community to enjoy.

People's Park is made up of three connected areas: Bells Close Recreation Ground, the sloping hillside that leads into woodland, and Popes Meadow. The woodland area forms a natural link between the main park and Popes Meadow.

The park is designated as a County Wildlife Site because it is home to the rare Great Pignut plant (Bunium bulbocastinatum). People’s Park has also received the national Green Flag Award for its high standards of maintenance and visitor experience.

Bells Close has a modern children’s playground and a trim trail that is well used by families and people staying active. The area is popular for football and cricket. The car park on Havelock Road has 14 spaces, including two disabled bays for blue badge holders.

Popes Meadow is an open grassy slope that becomes a favourite spot for sledging during snowy weather. It is also the location of the council’s annual November fireworks display, which attracts visitors from across the town.
