Work experience and internships
Work experience and internships give individuals the opportunity to gain practical, real-world skills in a professional environment. Although similar in purpose, they differ in structure, duration, and level of responsibility.
Work experience are:
- short-term placements, often lasting a few days to a few weeks
- common for school or college students
- focused on observation, basic tasks, and understanding how a workplace operates
- helpful for building confidence, developing skills, and discovering types of work
- often unpaid
Internships are:
- longer placements lasting several weeks to several months
- suited to students, graduates, or those changing careers
- involving more meaningful tasks and responsibilities, similar to an entry-level role
- providing deeper industry insight, hands-on experience, and networking opportunities
- be paid or unpaid depending on the employer and the nature of the internship
