Council Tax discounts for people who live alone or with disregarded people

Your Council Tax bill is based on at least two adults living in a property. You might be able to get 25 per cent off your Council Tax bill if:

• you are the only adult in your property – this is known as a single person discount
• the other adults in your household are not counted for Council Tax – these are know as disregarded persons

Who can apply for single person discount

To qualify for a single person discount you must be:

• the only person aged 18 or over living in the property
• using the property as your sole or main home

You cannot receive this discount if there are any other adults using the property as their main home, even if they do not usually pay Council Tax.

How to apply

You will need to provide:

• the Council Tax reference number of your property
• details of other previous adults that lived in the property
• details of current adults living in the property

After you have applied for a discount

You must still pay the amount on your Council Tax bill until you hear from us.

If you qualify for the discount, we will check every year that you are still entitled to it. 

Backdating single person discount

We usually will not backdate a discount because it is almost impossible to verify. We might consider it if you provide strong evidence and our internal checks support the claim.

If your circumstances change

You must also cancel your discount within 21 days if someone moves in with you or your circumstances change.

If there have been no changes there is no need to reapply for a single person discount at the start of each new financial year.
