The consequences of poor sexual and reproductive health are largely preventable and include unplanned pregnancies, infections including HIV, pelvic inflammatory disease and infertility, psychological consequences, stigma, and poorer educational, social and economic opportunities.
By empowering Luton’s residents to make informed choices about their sexual and reproductive health, this plan supports the Luton 2040 vision of “a healthy fair and sustainable town where everyone can thrive, and no one has to live in poverty”.
For example, through improving access to contraception to women of childbearing age and providing sexual health education, this can reduce inequalities by reducing unplanned pregnancies and support women to manage their fertility. This means women stay in education or the workforce longer. Resulting in improved prospects, reduced poverty and an improved economy.
