Environmental crime

Businesses and residents must manage waste responsibly, and information is available on legal duties and how to pay or challenge fixed penalty notices.

Your responsibility as a resident

Putting the correct items in the correct bin helps us recycle properly. It is your responsibility to make sure your waste is sorted. We cannot collect bins that contain the wrong items.

The type of bins you have depends on whether you live in a house or a flat. Flats receive weekly refuse collections and fortnightly recycling collections.

Place all waste inside the bins provided. We do not collect any side waste left next to bins.

Taking items to the tidy tip

You can take household items to one of our two recycling centres in Luton. Bring proof of address, as staff may check that visitors live in the area.

Bulky waste collection

If you have large items or extra rubbish that will not fit into your bins and you cannot take it to a recycling centre, you can book a bulky waste collection. A fee may apply.

Check your waste carrier is registered

If you use a private waste carrier to remove bulky items, make sure they are registered on the Environment Agency website. If your waste is fly‑tipped and the carrier is not registered, you could receive a fine or face prosecution. Always check that your waste is being disposed of legally.
