Apply for a personal licence
A personal licence allow you to sell alcohol on behalf of any business that has a:
A personal licence is separate from the licence which authorises the premises to be used for the supply of alcohol.
You do not need to hold a personal licence to work at a pub or other business that sells alcohol.

Designated premises supervisor
All premises licensed to sell alcohol must have a designated premises supervisor (DPS). The DPS should hold a personal licence.
If you do not hold a personal licence, you must be authorised to sell alcohol by a personal licence holder. This is not required for the supply of alcohol in a members’ club.
Eligibility for a personal licence
To be eligible for a personal licence, you must:
- be aged 18 years or over
- hold a licensing qualification (in most cases) – for example, a BII Level 2 examination certificate or a similar accredited qualification such as the EDI NCPLH level 2 qualification
- have the legal right to work in the United Kingdom

You can send us your form and your evidence by email or by post.
Before submitting your application, make sure you are applying to the correct council. Your licence will always be issued by the council where you ordinarily live.
What you need to submit
You must submit:
- a completed application form
- a completed disclosure of convictions and declaration
- a basic disclosure within 1 month old
- 2 endorsed passport sized photographs
- a qualification certificate
- proof of your right to work in the UK
- the correct fee of £37
If you apply by post, provide your original passport sized photographs, basic disclosure and qualifications certificates. You can provide a colour photocopy of your passport.

Fees and payment
We will only accept your application once you have paid the fee of £37.
You can pay by cheque or by telephone.
Make sure you provide your contact details on the application form so that we can contact you to take payment.
Once we receive your completed application
Once payment has been received and your application accepted, a 14-day consultation period will start. This gives the police 14 days to make representations against your application should they decide to.
Providing there are no complications, your licence will be posted to your correspondence address on the 15th day.
