What it is
The Food Hygiene Rating Scheme helps you decide where to eat out or buy food by providing clear information about hygiene standards in restaurants, cafés, takeaways, pubs, hotels, supermarkets and other food businesses.
The scheme is run in partnership with the Food Standards Agency. Food safety officers inspect each business to check it meets legal food hygiene requirements, and the rating you see reflects the standards found at the time of the inspection.
You can search for ratings for local businesses – Food Standards Agency.
Businesses also receive a window sticker and certificate showing their rating. They are encouraged to display these where customers can easily see them, although this is voluntary.
