11/06/2019 - Official launch of Carers Central- providing support to carers when they need it

Sub heading

Carers Central event

All unpaid adult carers in Luton are welcome to attend the official launch of Carers Central on Friday, 14 June, 11am to 2pm at the UK Centre for Carnival Arts, St Mary’s Road, Luton, LU1 3JA.

Carers Central is a hub enabling adult carers to have the information, advice and support they need to live their own lives to the full, alongside their caring roles.

This is a free service funded by us and became live on 1 April; it is made up of a network of organisations led by the Disability Resource Centre whose aim is to empower carers to:

  •  care effectively and safely
  • look after their own health and well-being
  • fulfil their education and employment potential
  • have a life of their own alongside caring responsibilities
  • achieve the outcomes that matter to them as an individual

Visitors to the launch event will receive lots of information about the services and support that is available to them in the town, with a wide range of information stalls featuring local organisations and the opportunity to attend presentations from local providers including us, CHUMS, Total Wellbeing Luton, Carers Central, plus free teas, coffees and cakes will be available throughout the day.

You will also get the chance to meet Levi and Lorraine, Carers Central’s support workers who have been out and about in the town meeting with carers. They aim to help them find nearby support to meet their individual needs, from arranging an assessment with the council to respite care or courses for emotional resilience, workshops, or wellbeing groups.

There are many ways that this hub will help carers in Luton. The Carers Central website  provides support and advice about looking after yourself as a carer. There are also emergency numbers and links to other useful information.

Trained advisors are also available on 0300 303 0201 and will provide carers with accurate, up-to-date information in a range of formats. They can suggest partner organisations that are best placed to deal with an individual’s situation and highlight other agencies to call in for help.

Councillor Rachel Hopkins, portfolio holder for public health and commissioning said: “Our carers are unsung heroes, providing support on a regular basis, putting the needs of their loved ones first. We recognise the crucial role that they play and acknowledge that carers need help too, so that they can have fulfilling lives.

“Carers Central is a much needed resource providing the right support so that carers are aware that they are not alone and help is available when they need it. I would urge all unpaid adult carers to attend the launch and find out how they can enrich their lives, improve their wellbeing and receive the support they so richly deserve.”
