11/06/2019 - Celebrate Learning Disability Week 2019

Sub heading

Learning Disability Week

Along with our partners, we are celebrating Learning Disability Week (17 to 21 June) with a fantastic array of fun activities and events for adults with learning disabilities and their families.

This year’s theme focuses on people’s ability, emphasising their strengths and gifts.

43 year old Paul McCann, has a learning disability and has been using the council's day care services for over 10 years. He is excited to be volunteering for the week and hopes to support others with learning difficulties. He said: “I will be helping people out during the week. I am looking forward to going on the Autism bus.”

The week promises to be an exciting one packed with many enjoyable activities including an Autism bus, where you can try out assisted technology; sports activities like para-skiing, dancing and cricket; and even an Open Mic night where you can showcase your talent if you wish.

Councillor Javed Hussain, portfolio holder for adult social care said, “Learning disability week is a wonderful opportunity for those with learning disabilities and their families to come and see what’s on offer locally. We hope to create a positive and fun atmosphere as people try something they may not have even considered previously.

We know that sporting and group activities offer many benefits such as improved health and wellbeing, empowerment and greater social inclusion. We hope our residents take advantage of the activities to find out which services are available in the local community to help adults with learning disabilities lead more active and connected lives.”
