14/06/2018 - LLAL welcomes Heathrow decision and announces consultation events

Sub heading

Luton Council’s airport company - London Luton Airport Ltd (LLAL) - has welcomed the announcement that the Cabinet has approved plans for a third runway at Heathrow airport.

Secretary of State for Transport Chris Grayling announced last week that the Airport National Policy Statement (NPS) had been approved by Cabinet and will proceed to a parliamentary vote. The Government also took the opportunity to reaffirm their position that airports in the South-East and beyond should look to make best use of their existing runways.

Cllr Andy Malcolm, Chair of the LLAL board, said: “We welcome the announcement that the Government will be proceeding as planned with the Airport NPS. It’s been clear for some time that there is a strong need for additional airport capacity in the South-East.  Government figures suggest all London airports, including Luton, will be full by 2030.

“London Luton Airport (LTN) and Heathrow play different roles and serve different markets in the aviation sector. LTN primarily serves short-haul European destinations while Heathrow focuses on its role as one of the major European hub airports. We believe that the development at LTN will deliver valuable runway capacity to meet the specific needs of its catchment area for mainly short-haul, point-to-point journeys.

“With that in mind, we launched our London Luton Airport Vision for Sustainable Growth 2020-2050 in December 2017, which aligns with the Government’s position that airports should make best use of their existing runways. Our initial analysis suggests that the existing runway could serve up to 36-38 million passengers per year and we are in the process of preparing a Development Consent Order application which we will be submitting to the National Planning Inspectorate next year.

“LTN plays a valuable role in the South-East aviation market; it is the UK’s fifth biggest airport and one of the fastest growing. We have ambitious plans for the airport and look forward to playing a strong role in meeting the increasing demand for aviation.”

LLAL is pleased to be holding a ten-week consultation this summer on its proposals for London Luton Airport. A series of 17 community consultation events will take place in locations around Luton, Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire from 9 July – 4 August.
