09/08/2019 - Improvement works on major Luton road junction

Sub heading

Major roadworks will be taking place this month (from 19 August 2019) on a busy Luton roundabout.

The improvement scheme, which will involve converting the roundabout at Hitchin Rd, Stopsley Way and Vauxhall Way to a signalised T-Junction, is due to be completed mid 2020.  The junction will remain open throughout the majority of the upgrade and road users will be updated of any closures via the information (VMS) signs in place.

The aim of the scheme is to improve the safety and increase vehicle capacity at this important and busy intersection with a new T-Junction. The new system will mean improvements to traffic flow during peak periods as well as new controlled toucan crossings for pedestrians and cyclists, improved pathways and pedestrian areas and the introduction of a 30mph speed restriction limit.

Cllr Paul Castleman, portfolio holder responsible for planning and transport said: “This scheme is an important part of our work to improve the busy road network in Luton. While these works will inevitably cause some delays, in the long term they will help keep traffic flowing on this important route.

“We will do our best to ensure any disruption is kept to a minimum and that works are completed in the shortest time possible”.

As well as improving road safety and minimising congestion the project will mean new LED street lighting, additional planting to encourage new species and biodiversity as well a new sustainable drainage system and flood protection.  Any tree loss will be mitigated by planting replacement trees.
