Coronavirus guidance during Ramadan

​Some of you will start observing Ramadan on Thursday 23 or Friday 24 April. It's an important time for the Muslim faith where family and friends would traditionally come together to worship, pray and break the fast at the end of the day.
 
However due to the coronavirus crisis this Islamic holy month may need to be observed differently.
There's lots of information available online and we've outlined some guidance on Ramadan to assist you during these challenging times.

Is it safe to fast?

Abstaining from food and drink during daylight hours throughout Ramadan is an important part of the Muslim faith, if you are feeling well and don’t have an underlying health condition, it should still be safe for you to fast during this period.
 
As always, people with long-term health conditions such as diabetes are advised to seek medical advice to understand:
  • if fasting will impact on your condition
  • how to manage your medication
  • what you can do to prevent any adverse reactions
We would also urge vulnerable people (those aged 70 or over, those with an underlying health condition or pregnant) to speak to their GP to see if they can safely fast during Ramadan.
 
If your GP does not recommend fasting, you can speak to your local Imam for further guidance.
 
Anyone displaying symptoms or convalescing after having the virus should eat and drink normally as this will aid their recovery.

Stay healthy whilst fasting

It’s important to stay healthy and maintain a balanced diet when fasting. You can stay healthy by:
  • drinking plenty of plain water during non-fasting hours
  • cutting back on all types of caffeinated drinks including tea, coffee and fizzy drinks
  • eating a balanced diet during non-fasting hours to keep your body functioning properly during the day *
  • avoiding long periods of time in the sun

* Foods that release energy slowly, including natural unrefined carbohydrates (whole grains, vegetables, fruits) and protein (meat, fish, eggs, beans) will help you maintain your energy levels.

Social distancing during Ramadan

In line with government guidance, Mosques will remain closed. However you should continue to pray at home and must not invite anyone outside of your household for prayers or Iftars.
 
Please remember that you can only leave your home:
  • to shop for basic essentials
  • to do one form of exercise a day, alone or with other people you live with
  • for any medical need
  • to travel to and from work, but only where this is absolutely necessary
If you have to go out, you must stay 2 metres (3 steps) away from other people at all times.
 
Make sure you wash your hands for at least 20 seconds as soon as you get home.
