Shared Lives: could you be a carer?

Sub heading

Learning disability

Do you think you have what it takes to make a real difference to the life of someone with a learning disability?

Do you think you have what it takes to make a real difference to the life of someone with a learning disability?

If you live in Luton and have a room you’d like to rent, there is a life-changing opportunity to have a person with learning disabilities live with you and your family – either on a permanent basis, or for a few nights a month.

We'd like to hear from you if you would welcome an adult with learning disabilities into your home on a short term, permanent or emergency basis as part of the Shared Lives scheme.

What is Shared Lives?

Shared Lives helps adults with learning disabilities to live independently in the community as valued members of society.

Our Shared Lives team makes arrangements for individuals and families in Luton to provide accommodation and support to local adults with learning disabilities who may need a bit of extra support to live happy and independent lives.

What sort of people are Shared Lives carers?

Carers can be families, couples or single people, and we recruit people from a range of different backgrounds, skill sets and life experiences. Carers are there to help with daily tasks such as cooking, shopping, laundry, study, socialising and exercise.
We match carers with people who have similar interests.
You can apply for the scheme if you have a mortgage or rent your home. If you rent you must gain permission in writing from you landlord.
No qualifications are needed - just a willingness to care and share your life with others. Rent, expenses and full training are provided.
Cllr Sheila Roden said: “Opening your home to someone with learning disabilities is a very unique and rewarding experience as you really will be improving their life.”
