Home and personal alarm systems

Sub heading

Home and personal alarm systemsKnowing you can call for help quickly and easily can provide peace of mind if you live independently in your own home, particularly if you're elderly or have a disability.

It can also help carers, friends and family to feel reassured that you are safe.

Many people know about pendants which can be pressed should you fall, or if you feel unsafe and vulnerable. But there are other devices which are designed to check you are safe, and raise an alarm if you aren't.
Assistive Technology Solutions
In Luton these devices are provided by the Assistive Technology Solutions (ATS) team. ATS provide lifelines, telecare and other assistive technology equipment and solutions.

Lifeline and telecare equipment is monitored all year round 24 hours, seven days a week. Telecare alarms and sensors allow you to carry on living independent lives in your own home, safe in the knowledge that help is easily at hand whenever you need it.

How do Lifeline and Telecare alarms work?

The alarm system works very simply by plugging into your existing telephone line. We also now have Telecare alarms that work with GSM like mobile phones, not requiring a telephone line. However, these GSM systems are a little bit more expensive.

A range of non-intrusive sensors is linked to the 24-hour Wellbeing Lifeline Service, where trained operators take the most appropriate action to help in case you have had a fall or need help; whether it  that is contacting:

  • a family member or neighbour
  • your doctor
  • emergency services and/or paramedics
There is a range of Telelink sensors available including:

Personal trigger

Bogus caller button

Smoke detector

Fall detector

Flood detector

PIR (movement detector)

Bed/ chair occupancy sensor

How can I get a Lifeline or Telecare alarm?

If you only want the personal trigger alarm you can call ATS directly on 01582 720703 and speak to our Business Support officers.

If you feel you need additional, or different sensors you will need to contact our adult social care department instead. Our tlephone number is at the bottom of this page.

If you are eligible for social care we will need to give you an assessment of care needs where we will work with you to identify the type of care that best suits your individual situation.

Will I have to pay?

The alarm system works by simply plugging into your existing telephone line. If you don’t have one you will need to pay to have one installed.

There is a single charge for the installation of the equipment which is £19.50. The costs do go up with the GSM Lifeline and Telecare equipment because of the cost of the mobile line. The current rate of monitoring the alarm line is £3.20 per week.

If you're being referred through adult social care and you think you may not be able to pay this, your social worker can look at your finances to see if you'll be expected to pay the full amount.

What are the benefits of a Lifeline/Telecare system?

  • Speed of response – highly-skilled operators from the Wellbeing Lifeline Service will respond to your call and take the appropriate action to get the help you need when you need it
  • Personal service –your situation will be monitored until help arrives
  • Complete reassurance – 24-hour alarm monitoring
  • Easy installation
