How can I get care and support?

Sub heading

First we must work out if you are eligible for council-funded care If you are not eligible there is still a lot of help available in Luton.

'Care and support’ is the term used to describe the help some adults need when they are unable to complete day-to-day tasks because of a physical disability, a learning disability, a long-term health condition, frailty due to old age, mental ill-health or substance abuse. Care and support is also available to carers who care for an adult friend or family member and this has an impact on their own wellbeing.

Care and support can include:
  • support, home adaptations or home care to help you to remain independent in your own home
  • help to access a suitable care home, when living at home is no longer an option
  • temporary support, like reablement or rehabilitation after an accident, illness or stay in hospital

Follow our step-by-step guide below to learn about our assessment process, and how to get help from us with your care and support needs. If you think a family member of friend might need care and support, follow this link to find out more about how you can help them access services.

Step 1 - Contact us to tell us about your individual support needs

There is now a quicker and easier way to find out whether you, or a loved one, are eligible for care and support. Our online self-assessment will ask you about the activities you might need support with and will let you know whether you are eligible. There’s also an online financial assessment and a carers assessment.

Alternatively, you can contact us via our Customer Service Centre, details below, to talk about your individual needs. If you require emergency care, please ring us immediately to discuss your support needs.

Call our Customer Service Centre on: 01582 547659 or 547660 or email accessandassessment@luton.gov.uk

Step 2 - Find out if you are eligible for care and support

First we must work out if you are eligible for council-funded care. Once you have completed your online self-assessment you will get a call from a social worker who will talk to you in more detail about the answers you gave on your assessment. If you are eligible for support the social worker will find out more about the type of care you require.

Even if you are not eligible for care and support from the Council the online self-assessment will give you information about other help available in Luton. You’ll also find information on local support organisations on the Luton Direcoty.

Step 3 - Your personal budget

We will give you an estimated budget to spend on the type of care
and support to fit your assessed needs.
What can I spend my personal budget on?

Step 4 - Your financial assessment

We will look closely at your finances to see if you have to
contribute towards the cost of your care and support

Step 5 - Your care and support plan

You create a care and support plan which will show how you have chosen
to spend your personal budget

Step 6 - Your care and support can now be put in place

Once you and your social worker agree on your
care and support plan, your services can be put into place

Step 7 - Regular reviews

Your progress will be reviewed regularly and any necessary changes made.
You can request a review at any time
