The local government election takes place on Thursday 2 May 2019 for 48 Councillors in 19 Wards. The polling stations will be open from 7am to 10pm.

You can use the polling station lookup tool to locate your polling station.

Postal and proxy votes

If you know you will not be able to get to the polling station on the election day, you can apply for a postal vote or a proxy vote.

Voting by proxy just means that you appoint someone you trust to vote on your behalf. It can be useful if you fall ill and are unable to get to the polling station on election day, or if you are abroad during an election.

If you are not currently on the electoral register, then you need to complete a registration form by Friday 12 April 2019. You can apply online on the Your vote matters website.

To vote by proxy or postal, you’ll need to complete and sign an application form and then print and return it to us before the following deadlines.

  • postal vote applications: 5pm on Monday 15 April 2019
  • proxy vote applications: 5pm on Wednesday 24 April 2019
  • emergency proxy votes: 5pm on Thursday 2 May 2019

You can apply for a proxy vote on the Your vote matters website.

You need to sign your application form personally because the electoral registration office needs a copy of your signature for voting security reasons.

Standing as a candidate

If you wish to stand as a candidate in the local election, you must complete a nomination form by 4pm on Wednesday 3 April 2019.

We are holding a Candidate and Agent briefing on Monday 25 February 2019 at 6pm in the Town Hall. At the briefing we will provide you with the forms and explain the nomination process.

Verification and count

The verification and count will take place immediately following the close of poll at Inspire Sports Village and the result will be published on the council’s website.
