Luton 2018-19 Commemorations

Sub heading

Celebrating 18 months of commemorative events
The next 18 months promise to be special, not only for our nation, but also for Luton as we remember some of the most significant moments in our recent history.
During this time we will mark several 100 year anniversaries:
  • the guns falling silent at the end of World War 1
  • the first Act of Parliament giving women the right to vote
  • the founding of the Royal Air Force
  • the Luton Peace Day riots, which led to the momentous burning down of the Town Hall
To mark these important moments the Royal British Legion, partner organisations, local businesses and charities are working with us to organise a series of commemorative events across Luton.

2018 also marks:
  • 70 years since the Windrush passenger liner brought one of the first large groups of post-war West Indian immigrants to the UK
  • 80th anniversary of London Luton Airport opening
Annual events such as the carnival, Mela, fireworks and St Patrick’s Day will also have a commemoration theme, kicking off with our St George’s Day celebrations.
