Roadhump
In 2005 all local authorities were instructed to undertake a review speed limits on A and B roads and implement by 2011.

Speed limits on several key roads in Luton will be reduced to 30mph from 16 June following a review by Luton Borough Council.

In December 2005, The Secretary of State for Transport instructed all local authorities to review speed limits on all 'A' and 'B' roads in accordance with national guidance (DfT Circular 01/2006). Luton Borough Council carried out this review and also included roads that had a speed limit of more than 30mph.

As a result of the review and subsequent consultations, speed limits are to be reduced to 30mph at the following locations:

  • Bramingham Road (the entire length will now be 30mph)
  • Dunstable Road (from its junction with Chaul End Lane to its junction with Poynters Road)
  • Gipsy Lane (from its junction with Osborne Road to the Parkway roundabout)
  • Icknield Way (from its junction with Bramingham Road to its junction with Barton Road)
  • New Bedford Road from a point just north of its junction with Fountains Road to a point north of its junction with Riddy Lane / Barnfield Avenue)

The speed limits in all of these locations were previously 40mph.

Newlands Road
Objections were received for the proposed change of speed limit for Newlands Road from the national speed limit to 50mph. These were upheld and the change to speed limit will now be re-advertised at 40mph.

The purpose of the lowered speed limit is to reduce the likelihood of accidents and improve the safety of road users. Slowing vehicles to 30mph both makes accidents less likely to happen and hugely reduces the chances or death or serious injury when they do.

Advanced warning signs will inform road users that the new speed limits are coming and work to install new permanent signs is currently being carried out. The new speed limits will come into force from 00.00 on Monday 16 June 2008.
