Household waste
Your recycling and refuse collections are changing from 5 December 2011. Christmas bin collection timetable is available to download at the bottom of this page.

Despite a continuing increase in the number of properties across the borough over the past few years, our bin collections have stayed the same. This means that that our current recycling and refuse routes are no longer the most efficient. To improve value for money and the effectiveness of our bin collection service, without reducing the level of service, we are introducing new recycling and refuse collection rounds.

How will the changes affect me?
The frequency of your bin collection will stay the same, so your black bin will still be emptied weekly and your green bin, brown bin and glass box will be emptied fortnightly, as they were before.

The following changes will affect only some areas in Luton:

  • the day on which your recycling and refuse is collected may change
  • alternate-week collections of green and brown bins may be swapped

All households in Luton will shortly receive new collection calendars for the next year, advising you of any changes to refuse and recycling collections in your street. This also includes dates for all Christmas and bank holiday collections. Look out for the leaflet which will be posted through your letterbox in the next few weeks.

To find your new collection day open the A-Z Recycling & Refuse Collection days download at the bottom of the page. This will also tell you which recycling calendar schedule you are on.

When you know which recycling calendar schedule you are on, view the appropriate download at the bottom of the page to see when to put out your recycling rubbish.

Assisted collection
If you are on our assisted collection scheme, your details will be allocated to the new collection rounds automatically and you do not have contact us.

How you can help
These changes will affect around 30,000 properties. During the short changeover period, some residents may experience a short delay between their old and new collection days. If you need extra capacity for your recycling during that time, you can use our tidy tips (Household Waste Recycling Centres or your Neighbourhood Recycling Centres).

Please help us by reminding your neighbours about the new collection schedules for recycling and refuse bins – especially if they are elderly or vulnerable.

In exceptional circumstances when refuse collections have been affected by the weather, please see our latest news page as this will hold the most up to date information.
