25/02/2013 - Come and celebrate International Women’s Day in Luton

Sub heading

St George's Square

The Mayoress of Luton, Rose Knight, invites you to an International Women’s Day (IWD) event on Friday 8 March, 6pm – 8.15pm at the Town Hall.

Rose Knight said: “Every year on International Women’s Day, countries around the world are celebrating women’s achievements. It’s a great opportunity to look at how far we have come, from women securing the right to vote to females now being accepted in what were male dominated roles.”

This free event will feature guest speakers including Councillor Hazel Simmons, Leader of Luton Borough Council, Dr Nazia Khanum OBE from Equality in Diversity, Nikki Bradshaw, Human Resources Director, BBA Aviation, Barbara Gill, Director, Mount Vernon Cancer Trust and Morcea Walker MBE acting as MC.

Guests will also have the opportunity to try crystal healing, reiki, and colour therapy and observe students carrying out hair and beauty demonstrations. There will also be a variety of local women’s organisations information stands including Women’s Aid in Luton, Steppingstones, Luton All Women’s Centre and Nine Red. Light refreshments will also be served.

Rose added: “I hope as many women as possible from around Luton take this chance to join in our local celebrations. Women have more opportunities now than they have ever had and that is thanks to the actions of many who have in the past worked tirelessly and also continue today to tackle gender inequalities. It’s going to be very informative and also lots of fun!”

Donations to the Mayor’s nominated charities - Mary Seacole, Mercy Worldwide, Age Concern and the Foundation for the Study of Infant Deaths (FSID) are welcome.
