04/10/2012 - Challney awards celebrate local heroes

Subheading

Challney local hero awards

Community spirit and hard work in Challney was celebrated recently at a community awards evening.

Around 80 people attended the event, held at Challney Community Centre, which recognised organisations, groups and individuals who have gone the extra mile to help benefit the local community.

Also in attendance on the evening was Luton North MP, Kelvin Hopkins, the town’s Mayor, Cllr Syd Knight and ward councillors Tom Shaw and Tahir Malik.

Winners were announced in seven categories, judged independently by ward councillors. One of the night’s winners was Peter Smith, who won the Exceptional Achievement Award.

Peter is a prominent fundraiser who has helped to raise over £250,000 for the area. In addition, he regularly serves as master of ceremonies at a variety of events and organises regular social events for other members of the community.

Peter’s efforts were acknowledged with the award, and he was described as a greatly regarded member of the community who has consistently improved the lives of other people.

Cllr Sheila Roden, Portfolio Holder for community development, said: “The awards evening was a fantastic opportunity to honour just a few of the residents in Challney who do so much to benefit others.

“Local people made it clear to us that the event was something they really wanted to take place and through the ‘Your Say, Your Way’ scheme we were able to make it happen.

“I would like to say a huge congratulations to all of the winners and runners-up, and thank them for their hard work and dedication.”
