M1 Junction 10 traffic
The existing Junction 10a of the M1 is a large roundabout which connects the M1 Spur to Airport Way and London Road, linking Luton to the wider motorway network. The junction experiences significant queues and delays, particularly at peak travel times.

Improvements are required to cope with the existing traffic problems as well as provide capacity for increased demand arising from proposed employment and housing growth.

The council have secured Growth Area Funding (GAF) from the Homes & Communities Agency in 2008 and has been working with the Highways Agency, Central Bedfordshire Council and our designer, URS to develop an appropriate engineering and environmental solution. Further details about the scheme can be found by clicking on the above links.

We are proposing to make improvements to the junction, including the removal of the existing Junction 10a roundabout and provision of a continuous and widened carriageway between the M1 Junction 10 and A1081 Airport Way, and new roundabouts and slip roads giving access to London Road.  The proposed scheme will be the subject of an application to the Secretary of State for Transport (c/o The Planning Inspectorate) for a development consent order (DCO) under the Planning Act 2008, as amended.  It will require environmental impact assessment and accordingly an environmental statement will be submitted with the DCO application setting out the expected impacts.
