Cycling Santa
Cycling to school is fun and enables children to travel independently. It is a good way of including activity in daily life and has environmental benefits.

Cycling to school is fun and cycling with friends or family gives an opportunity to socialise as part of every day life. We work with Luton schools to create safer routes to school for walking and cycling.

The NHS recommends cycling or walking to school as a way of keeping active as a family, for children to stay at a healthy weight. Children need to have at least 60 minutes of moderate activity each day and cycling to school provides an opportunity to build activity into the daily lives of children.

For each child who cycles to school, a parent's car is left at home. Leaving the car at home eases congestion around the school gate, improves local air quality and cuts down carbon emissions that contribute to global warming.

Ask your school to support cycling to school by arranging Bikeability Cycle Training for students. Schools also support cycling to school by providing secure cycle parking, have a cycling policy and cycle permit scheme having a school travel plan and by becoming a Bike It School. A way of encouraging cycling to school includes having a Cycle Train.

Benefits of choosing to cycle to school include:

  • Children working better in lessons
  • Children who feel fitter and more independent
  • Taking part in Sustainable Schools
  • Taking part in Healthy Schools
  • Parents who may choose to cycle to school with their children
  • Children who may choose to cycle to school together
