The Responsible Road User Initiative is for all road users. To encourage people to make Luton a safe place to travel in.

Through education, training and publicity the Responsible Road User Initiative aims to develop a sense of responsibility for one’s own safety and the safety of others.  To act sensibly and safely, to be courteous and considerate and to demonstrate an understanding of the needs of all who use the roads and footpaths.

The concept is to encourage people to make a written pledge to become a ‘Responsible Road User’ and abide by the principles of the initiative.

  • Obey the rules and regulations in the Highway Code (and keep up to date)
  • Treat all road users with respect
  • Show tolerance to others mistakes
  • Set a good example to others
  • Seek to improve my road user skills
  • Ensure children in my care develop a good attitude and behaviour to the use of the roads and pavements
  • Be an advocate for road safety by passing the message on

Everyone who pledges to be a responsible road user will receive a free goodie bag of road safety items, and regular newsletters to keep up to date with road safety news and campaigns.  Plus entry to road safety competitions to win relevant prizes.
